Burials

A Burial is a traditional act of committing the deceased body to earth, often within a cemetery or churchyard.

What happens at a Burial?

Mourners may gather for a funeral service before a burial. A funeral service can last anywhere between 20 - 60 minutes, involving hymns or songs, eulogies and readings, and prayers. Funeral services can be as formal or as informal as you would like. Most burial grounds have a chapel or a room where the service can take place, or there may be a particular church you would like to use.

Following the funeral service is the committal, where the deceased body is laid to rest and committed back to earth.

If the burial is an attended funeral, mourners gather at the graveside for the committal alongside an officiant. You may decide to have readings, songs, and prayers during the committal - this can be tailored to your requests. Loved ones may scatter soil or flowers onto the coffin as it is lowered into the ground. An unattended funeral is where family and friends may choose to have a ceremony, event or service for the deceased person, but do not attend the burial itself.
